What are the finest blinds for Bifold doors ?

If you've recently enlarged your home or followed any interior design/homebuilding trends, you've probably noticed that bifold doors are the go-to type of window for almost any home nowadays. With black or grey frames, these massive expanses of glass bring in light, give your kitchen/extension a sense of space, and, because they cover the entire back of a house, help to open up access to the yard. As a result, these would make wonderful kitchen blinds. They are not only a useful way to add light to your home or new extension, but they also look wonderful.

Adding a set of bi-folds to the back of your house helps to open the house out onto the garden, and if you're lucky, you'll enjoy the full advantage of having them on a warm summer day.

This is an important point, How do you cover such massive windows? Curtains are inappropriate for such a modern and attractive window and frame. So it's up to the blinds to take care of covering your new bifold doors. You can't really install blinds onto these doors if they stick out, but with our perfect-fit blinds, you'll be able to insert slimline blinds inside the frame.

What are our alternatives?

So, first and foremost, we must determine whether the doors open outwards or inwards. Most bi-folds stack together and upon each other at the side of your opening. We can reach the inner recess on either side of the windows if they fold outwards into the garden. This is fantastic because we can install blinds into the top of the window recess or either side because the window is not taking up this space.

If they open inward, we should consider mounting them on the face of the lintel above the window. This is a good alternative because it keeps them up and out of the way, but it prevents you from adding vertical blinds over the bifold doors. This is also the solution we would recommend if you have a sliding patio door or bifold doors. You only have the option of installing outside of the recess to keep the doors open.

So, below, we've highlighted where to put your blinds. The top yellow line indicates where you would install the lintel outside of the recess. Inside the recess, you would put the blinds in the two yellow squares on the left and right sides of the window, but you would also need to install a central bracket in the centre to support the opposite end of the blinds. A window of this size would require at least two roller shades.

Types of Blinds for Bifold Doors

  • Bifold Door roller blinds

If you want roller blinds, measure the width of your doors first - most fabrics and blinds can be made up to 300cm wide, so you can get away with two roller blinds on a 6m wide pair of doors. This is fantastic since it allows you to move the control chains to the left and right of each blind. When you separate a set of bifold doors into 3x blinds, you'll have a control cord dangling in the middle of your opening - not ideal!

  • Bifold door Venetian blinds

Venetian Blinds are a somewhat more difficult alternative since, with a maximum width of 240cm, you can't fill such a large gap between them. Because of this, as well as the weight of the blinds, raising and lowering the doors may get tedious if you use them frequently. You should also keep in mind that, unlike roller blinds, these blinds have a stack height. When you pull the blind up, the slats layer up and add significant depth to the blind. A 200 cm long wooden blind will have a rough stack height of 23cm.

  • Bifold door vertical blinds

As previously said, these are an excellent choice for really large bifold doors because the track that vertical blinds travel down may be constructed up to 3m wide! That will give you up to 6m of coverage. When using verticals, the fabric stack (bunch) can be on the left, right, or split down the middle and collected evenly at each end. You can also position the controls to the left or right, allowing you to keep them out of the way.

  • Ideally suited for bifold doors

These are thin profile blinds that clip into the window itself, with four brackets sitting between the rubber beading and the glass, and then a frame housing the aluminium slats clips onto them. The blinds can then be tilted and angled as needed, then lifted up and down by their handle.
